The shop

A florist with no menu

Vince runs One South Sycamore by himself, at 1 South Sycamore Street, across from the Lukoil in the middle of Newtown. He started out on street stands in Brooklyn and Manhattan. His flowers are field-cut around the world, in places like New Zealand, Japan, South America, and Kenya, and shipped in.

There is no menu. A customer tells him the occasion, he walks them back to the cooler, suggests combinations, and prices it on the spot.

The problem

Every florist site is a catalog

Most florist websites are built like stores: fixed bouquets, prices, a cart. That would have described a different shop. The site had to show what Vince does without boxing it into products he doesn't sell.

What I built

His photographs, where the flowers come from, and one way to reach him

The site leads with his own photographs at full quality. A 3D globe shows where his flowers are grown. Gallery, about, and visit pages cover the rest, and every page ends the same way: call or text the shop.

It is fully static, with no database and nothing for him to maintain.

Decisions that mattered

  1. 01

    No prices and no checkout

Vince prices in person and doesn't want online orders, so the site never shows a price or a product grid. It sends people to him.

  2. 02

I built a contact form, then took it out

Vince doesn't use email, so a form would have sent messages somewhere he never checks. Calling or texting is how the shop works, so that is the only button on the site.

  3. 03

    One name everywhere

Early drafts used a few names for the shop. I went with the one on the street sign over his door, which is also his Instagram handle, and bought the matching domain.

  4. 04

A quiet interface for loud photos

His photographs are saturated: magenta roses, bright green dianthus. The design stays neutral, warm white and deep green, so the flowers carry all the color.
